We celebrated the start of a new school year with an All-Family Not-Back-to-School Party, one of @HIS' largest events ever. We had a potluck dinner, an ice cream sundae bar, door prizes, and a time of reflection on why families feel blessed to be homeschooling. In one of our most popular field trips, we visited the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Pacific Science Center where we got to see biblical texts written around the time of Christ's life on earth, as well as supporting scientific and archeological displays.

October '06

The October parent meeting was a time of great blessing for those who attended as we discussed "Spiritually Nurturing Our Children." We shared our favorite resources and made prayer journals to use at home as we pray for our children. We also had a costume party at which @HIS member Jill Yang premiered the VeggieTales movie "Gideon." Many party-goers then caravanned to North Seattle Alliance Church's Harvest Party.

November '06

At our first annual Mom's Night In, we painted pottery holiday themed plates and enjoyed dessert and socializing with other @HIS moms. We also held our third annual Ice Skating/Operation Christmas Child Party at Highland Ice Arena. Besides ice skating, we also shared snacks and packed boxes of gifts for Operation Christmas Child.

December '06

@HIS member Lynn Roodhouse organized a trip to Olympic Ballet Theatre's production of "The Nutcracker." Seattle's Hearts Co-op joined @HIS members at the performance for a group of 90! We helped break a Guinness Book of World Records World Reading Record by gathering together to simultaneously read a passage from Charlotte's Web at the same time as thousands of others across America were doing the same thing. See the June '07 newsletter for a letter of recognition from Walden Media, who sponsored the record breaking attempt. We celebrated Christmas together at the All-Family Christmas Party, hosted by Tara and Michael Allman. The evening included a potluck dinner, cookie decorating, a gift exchange, and caroling.

February '07

February was a busy month for @HIS, which began with a trip to the Woodland Park Zoo. At our February parent meeting, we were very excited to have well-known and encouraging homeschooling speaker Diana Waring give her presentation "His Yoke is Easy and His Burden is Light." For the third year in a row, Carie Fagan hosted the @HIS Mother-Daughter Sweetheart Tea. Moms and daughters enjoyed tasty treats and tea served on china plates and cups, lacey linens, and a live harpist. Dads and sons were invited to a Father-Son Game Night after the ladies were done. Each family brought their favorite snack and game to share. @HIS member Miriah Day organized a Flag Class with her neighbor, a veteran and retired postal worker. He taught students about the history of the American flag, laws governing the flag, and flag etiquette. The day was topped off with a flag craft and a flag cake.

March '07

At the New Homeschoolers' Open House, Jill Bell gave an overview of Washington's Homebased Instruction Law. This was followed by informal time for attendees to learn about different methods of homeschooling and talk to veteran homeschoolers. Those who attended the Moore Theatre's Pluck! Concert had a real treat as we listened to this stringed trio perform classical music pieces while engaged in hilarious antics.

April '07

@HIS dad David Fagan led a Storytelling Workshop for parents. Topics discussed included creating interesting characters, getting your children in volved in storytelling, and using stories to teach character lessons. The Wing Luke Asian Museum was the first museum in @HIS' new First Thursday tradition, taking advantage of free admission at Seattle area museums on the first Thursday of each month.

The 2nd Annual All-Family Celebration of Books and Book Swap was a great success. We had a potluck dinner, swapped books, made our own book marks and book plates, enjoyed book readings by @HIS members from their favorite books, and had a family literary challenge, won by the Lammey family. Our last formal event of the school year was a Wurlitzer Organ demonstration and Silent Film Lecture at the Paramount Theatre.
